Congratulations to Douglas Hamilton, who was recently invited to Twickenham to receive an award as a Valued Volunteer, in the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer Recognition Programme.
Many of you will know Douglas from his numerous volunteer activities in the club, including his most recent Chief Executive and Treasurer roles. He is still helping with the 50:50 draw and Player Sponsorship. For many years Douglas has also been involved with the Northumberland Rugby Union, representing our club in a number of areas.Duggy had a lengthy, distinguished playing career with Tynedale 1stXV, playing as a centre, back row and second row at various stages as well as captaining the club for two periods (1964-65 and 1967-69).After he called time on his playing career in 1977(?) he took up a number of non-playing roles including:-
- Club Coach
- Chairman of Rugb
- Subscription Secretary
- Treasurer
- Chief Executive (1997-99 and 2003-2015)
- President (1984-86)
In 1986 Douglas was made a life member of Tynedale Rugby Club.
Douglas joined the Northumberland Rugby Committee in 1975 and susequently sat on a number of various county sub-committees. In 1990 Douglas was made County President and in 2002 he was awarded a life membership of the County in recognition of his services.
There is a degree of uncertainty as to when Douglas's lengthy playing career at Tynedale actually began but Douglas strongly denies that he is the player wearing the scrum cap on the mural above the bar taken from the 1935 Northumberland Senior Cup Final.
